Florida TeleHealth Sessions Q & A

What’s a New York City sex and relationship therapist doing in Florida?

For years I’ve had calls from people in Miami, Boca Raton, Naples, Marco Island, Palm Beach, and elsewhere in Florida asking for TeleHealth appointments. Especially since 2018, when my book Love Worth Making was published and featured on NBCToday, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Podcast, and other major media.

I grew up in South Florida myself, in Pinecrest, and graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High. My wife and kids and I travel to Miami frequently to visit my parents in Coconut Grove and to see friends in Miami Beach, Surfside, Aventura, and Sunny Isles. When my book launched in 2018, we did a launch event at Books & Books in Coral Gables.

Then in 2019 the Florida Department of Health developed a new TeleHealth License to enable practitioners licensed in other states to do video Telehealth sessions throughout Florida, and things began to take off.

What kinds of problems lend themselves best to TeleHealth video treatment?

Every person’s situation is different. I make it a point to have a phone conversation first with every individual or couple who contacts me, to make sure TeleHealth is appropriate for them.

In general, TeleHealth video treatment is most appropriate for individuals and couples who are highly motivated to work collaboratively with a health professional. TeleHealth may not be appropriate if you are in acute crisis.

Many patients consulting me for TeleHealth do so because they have complex conditions that requires the special expertise of an MD sex therapist, or a problem at the interface of sex therapy, medicine, and/or psychiatry. Some are referred specifically by health care providers in Florida who know my work.

Does insurance reimburse for Florida TeleHealth video appointments?

Most private health insurers now cover TeleMedicine services. But you’ll want to confirm with your own insurer about specific coverage. When you and I first speak on the phone, I can tell you which specific codes (they’re called “CPT codes”) to mention when you speak with your insurer.

Do you accept insurance?

No, I don’t participate with any insurance plans. But you’ll get an insurance-compatible billing statement from me to submit to your insurer for reimbursement.

What are your office hours?

My first appointment is usually at 8:00 am, and I usually finish with my last patient around 9:30 pm.  I don’t work on the Jewish sabbath.

How do TeleHealth video appointments work?

Once we set up the appointment, I’ll email you a link to my “virtual office.” When it’s time for your session, just click on the link, follow the prompts, and I’ll join you there.

How long do video appointments last?

I usually schedule an hour and a half for a first visit. Subsequent appointments are usually 45 minutes to an hour.

How can I request a video appointment from Florida?

Just to call or text me at 917-270-0384.

Or leave a message for me through my contact page. Please be sure to leave your phone number, so I can call or text you back.

Are TeleHealth video sessions suitable for couples?

Many couples in my practice have reported excellent results with TeleHealth video sessions for sex and relationship issues.

If your schedules don’t permit being in the same place at the same time, you can also log in from separate locations. This can be particularly useful for dual-career couples, long-distance couples, and people who travel a lot.

Are TeleHealth video sessions suitable for sex therapy?

Very often, yes. Sex therapy is just a focused kind of therapy for quickly resolving sex problems. By the way, modern sex therapy is strictly a talking therapy. There’s never any physical touching involved.

Sex therapy is solution-focused. You should come away from a first appointment with a better understanding of your problems, and having learned some specific things you can put into action right away.

What if I already have a therapist in Florida?

I often consult with individuals or couples who are already in therapy, but who need a fresh take on a sexual problem.

Often the therapist themself makes the referral, because they know a sex therapy consultation can sometimes clarify things and suggest new strategies for helping an individual or couple get “un-stuck.”
