Experience and training
Dr. Snyder received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco (M.D. 1983), followed by a medical internship at Mt Zion Medical Center, San Francisco (1983-84), psychiatry residency at the Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Hospital / Cornell University Medical Center (1984-87), fellowship in Behavioral Medicine and Consultation Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC (1987-89), and sex therapy training at Mt. Sinai’s Center for Human Sexuality (1987-89) under Raoul Schiavi, M.D. and Patricia Schreiner-Engel, Ph.D.
Dr. Snyder served as Director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service at Mount Sinai Medical Center from 1990-2000, and still teaches residents and medical students at Mt. Sinai on topics related to human sexuality. He is an academic graduate of the New York University Psychoanalytic Institute.
He has been in full-time private practice on Manhattan’s Upper West Side since 2000, and is currently Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. He is an active member of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR); has been a presenter, workshop leader, and discussant at the Society’s national meetings; has served on both its Professional Book Award and Consumer Book Award committees; and since 2012 has been Chairman of the SSTAR Consumer Book Award Committee.
He is considered one of this generation’s leading voices in the field of sexuality, and his opinions on sex and relationship issues are widely sought in the media. Dr. Snyder lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with his wife and children.
